If there’s one thing military life prepares you for, it’s being able to adapt to just about anything.
And those skills are coming in super handy for me this week.
Not only am I starting graduate school – full time – but my man and I are embarking on our own adventure of opening a business. I have to ask myself if I’m taking on more than I can handle. This is another military brat trait; that I’m sure of.
My man is really good at seeing the bigger picture. I on the other hand am over here fretting about HOW this business is going to come together, while he’s focusing on the bigger picture and isn’t worrying (as much) about the details. He’s the reason my word of the year is ‘believe.’
You have to keep your eye on the result. You have to believe that when you keep following your dream it will come true. When you do, all the pieces will fall together and you’ll get exactly where you want to go. This is what I keep reassuring myself about. This is why I believe.
The biggest trick is to not lose focus and to not let others bring you down. There are people out there like that. These people see you reaching for the stars and want nothing more than to tether you to the ground so you can’t accomplish your goal, all because they’re too afraid to reach themselves.
Don’t let the naysayers get to you. Just smile and keep working hard to get what you want.
And yes, it will be hard. My guy spends hours upon hours reviewing and researching laws and permits. I’m about to be neck-deep in social work classes and while we’ll be no more than 10 feet away from each other most days, we’ll be in our own little worlds working on our hopes and dreams.
The best part about tackling this adventure with someone else is that when the anxiety and worries get to be too much, I always have him to lean on. And it goes both ways – whenever one of us is stressing out, the other can build the excitement back up with the plan for the future.
That’s how you know you’ve found a good business and life partner. That’s how I know I’ve found mine.
What are you life goals? Do you have a plan to reach them or are you just dreaming? It’s never too late to reach for the stars.
